New £350k All-Weather Pitch Opens
Howden School and Technology College is pleased to announce the opening of its new all-weather sports facilities,
funding for which has been generously provided by the Football Foundation in partnership with the East Riding of
Yorkshire Council. The official opening was held at 2.00 pm on Wednesday 20 September 2006.
As part of the opening ceremony, a series of events was planned, including a football coaching session for students led by members of Hull City Football Club and several matches and culminated in a Howden Staff versus Former Students competition. The state-of-the-art synthetic turf football pitch has been designed to a professional standard and built to the highest quality specification. It presents an exciting prospect to extend sports in the Howden area and will greatly enhance existing facilities. The pitch will benefit both students at the school and the local community, as it is floodlit and available for hire outside normal school opening hours. In addition, the associated changing rooms have been completely refurbished to the same high standard. The school was successful in winning a £208,641 grant from the Football Foundation. Funded by the FA Premier League, The Football Association, Sport England and the Government, the Football Foundation is the nation’s largest sports charity with a £45m budget going straight into the heart of football. Yorkshire’s schools and sports clubs can find out about getting funding for projects at www.footballfoundation.org.uk Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “The improvements at Howden School and Technology College are another important boost to the quality of sports provision in the area, which local people can enjoy. The Football Foundation has supported 241 projects worth over £43m across Yorkshire since it was launched in July 2000. We welcome more applications from schools, clubs and councils right across the county.“ Mr A Williams, Headteacher at Howden School and Technology College said: “The opening of the new pitch is great news for the school and the surrounding area and it will make a real difference to the local community in terms of providing top quality sporting facilities. We are very grateful for the investment made and the hard work put in by those involved in securing the grants and we look forward to welcoming people to the school to take advantage of the new facilities.”
